1. Our environment is still Windows XP, how does Swimage ensure data protection during a migration to Windows 7 and/or Windows 8.1?

Swimage has safeguards in place to ensure data protection including:

·    Wrappers around USMT to increase the reliability

·    Full system roll back, Swimage can roll back any system to the prior OS in 3 minutes

·    Encrypted data remains securely encrypted throughout the migration

·    Prior to deployment, Swimage automatically takes a snapshot of the entire drive which allows for any missing data to be easily retrieved and restored. This snapshot does not duplicate the data, so it does not consume additional unnecessary drive space.

2. How does Swimage handle encrypted devices?

Swimage allows encrypted machines to remain securely encrypted throughout the migration process. We currently have integration with BitLocker, Point Sec, PGP, Guardian Edge, and McAfee End Point. However, we are always looking to add more compatibility and can easily add additional encryption integration if you have encryption software not listed. Please contact us.

3. After Swimage completes the operating system migration, are the users functional without needing technical assistance from the service desk?

Yes, users are functional following the migration. Swimage automatically builds the image by layering templates, transfers all data, reinstalls all approved applications and joins the domain.

4. How are users notified that their machine is targeted for a migration?

Swimage has built-in communication that can be set up to automatically email users when their PC is targeted for deployment with a list of the approved applications that will be reinstalled and their migration date. Additional email reminders can be setup at your discretion. You also have the ability to enable users to respond with affirmation or to decline and request a new date.

5. Is there an option for the user to delay the operating system deployment or to self-provision?

Yes, you have the ability to enable users to respond with affirmation or to decline and request a new date. Since the service desk can enable Swimage, users may also self-provision by sending a request to their service desk.

6. Does Swimage have an agent? And which systems management infrastructures does Swimage integrate with?

Swimage does not have an agent, it works well as a stand-alone tool although you will get the most feature rich experience with any of the following systems management infrastructures: SCCM 2007, SCCM 2012, Altiris, LANDesk, and Tivoli (BigFix).

7.  Do I have to maintain a separate image for each hardware type, department, and location?

No! Swimage not only produces a single binary image for each operating system, but it manages and creates it automatically.  No hardware drivers are in the image, No department specific applications, and No site settings.
Swimage truly is the only “Single World-wide Image“!

8.  We have users at remote sites, do you have a process that eliminates the need for clients to ship their PCs so as to not result in losing days of work for break-fix?   Can Swimage accommodate remote clients’ PCs?

Yes, Swimage can be installed on a USB or DVD that can go to the home user or remote office for a completely automated remote deployment.

12. I have MDT and OSD in SCCM for free. Why would I need Swimage?

Free is not free when you are not given a roadmap from Microsoft on how to build or implement their own software. At best they will provide you with how some of their customers implemented the software and little more. Please also consider the following:

  • Microsoft consulting averages $300/hr. and the average build out take 2 years and is not used for ongoing break-fix or even the next migration.
  • They have an inherent incentive to have you miss the deadline of an OS sunset.
  • And MDT/OSD rely heavily on PowerShell scripting, this is a difficult language if you are not already an expert.

13. I do not have the budget for additional software licenses.

Swimage pays for itself by reducing 80% of desk-side visits from the service desk. All software related issues can be resolved by reimaging the machine. The reason this is not commonly done now is because most companies have an exhaustive reimaging process without pre-validation and no guarantee of data protection.

14. I do not have the budget for additional consulting in regards to OS deployment.

Swimage is ready out of the box to deploy your machines on the first day we arrive, and the fine-tuning only takes 4-6 week total.

15. I can build a deployment solution myself; it is easy to do.  I do not need a tool.

Building and maintaining a homegrown solution will take over your full time responsibilities. Do you really want this to be the only thing you ever do?
